What happened to 2012?

Full of Enthusiasm, I varnished my mast and spars to perfection in the sun of March and early April, washed and cleaned the hull and applied antifoul.  I then rigged Margherita and loaded up all my (rather too extensive) inventory of stowed items.  Then it rained and the wind blew.  Then I hurt my back.  Then it rained rather more..........then I gave up! I did not launch at all in the end.

So, all that was accomplished in 2012 was varnishing and the construction of a new experimental and as yet untested toilet which is a cross between a "bucket & chuckit" and a comode (see below).  Looking on the bright side, all I have to do this year is antifoul again. I have to get afloat in 2013 if only because I have entered in the Old gaffers Association's 50th anniversary rally at Cowes in August.

When I was discussing the build of Margherita with Phil Swift, I was keen to fit in a Porta-Potti. however, even the smallest available was a stowage nightmare, let alone the problem of using it without mishap. So, we settled on "bucket & chuckit" and I stow a bowl under the cockpit sole.  The picture above shows the cabin in normal sitting mode.  The idea for the toilet shown below was to see if I could get more privacy by rigging up something in the cabin for those times when one is not moored up in isolation somewhere.  The picture below shows the toilet base sitting across the side supports that hold the seat base when it is raised to form the head of the port sleeping berth. The seat base stays in its low position and I moved the cushions out of the way for obvious reasons. When not in use, the toilet base stows under the seat base rather neatly. The plastic bowl, with its plywood lid, stows under the cockpit sole as before.

Dry run testing suggests that there is just sufficient knee and head room to use the device with washboards in, but I am not sure about with the hatch shut - I may have to cut my head off.... we shall see! (update 2015 - it works just fine with the hatch shut and washboards in and allows useful privacy when other boats are moored close by)

Meanwhile, on a more uplifting note, and to help me remember what it all feels like on a good day, here are a few pictures of Margherita anchored up in sunshine during 2011.  I hope for the same in 2013.

  1. Hi,

I will hopefully be at the OGA's Cowes 50th event - and Yogaff as well - might see you there. My boat is Marjory - Shilling No1 - Yawl Rig.

  2. Hello. Are you the gentleman who was looking for a Shilling on the OGA site? I spoke with Marjory's owner before ordering mine. He was very enthusiastic and loved the boat. He failed to sell me yawl rig though! I have booked myself into the Cowes 50 weekend, but not Yogaff. Hopefully we can meet on the water sometime. Where are you based?

  3. Hi,
Like me, the chap you refer to is an Emsworth (Chichester Harbour)based sailor - he came out with me before finding a Shilling and is now the proud owner of what I think was Phil Swift's last Shilling (another Yawl). Roger sold Marjory to me a few years ago. She's kinda special. We live in East Sussex but we moor her in Emsworth and tend to have a holiday or two with her elsewhere (probably the west country again this year).

  4. I was going to ask where you sail but thought I should try and find out from your excellent blog first ( then seem to have had great difficulty entering this comment et )

  5. Hi Shilling1. Don't know what happened there. The answer is Poole. I spend most of my time in and around the harbour, sleeping on board for a few days at a time; generally on my own as my partner is not that keen unless the weather is perfect. I have so far only ventured East as far as Christchurch, Keyhaven and Lymington. The boat has hitherto overwintered in my parent's garden in Bournemouth, but that is to be sold so I will have to tow the boat home to North Wilts. this may encourage me to try trailer sailing elsewhere - which I have so far bottled out of. Phil Swift and now Dick Philips talked about an owners association, or perhaps a rally. As a start, maybe the three of us shilling owners should try and meet up somewhere - if we get a summer. Phil Swift showed me some articles written around 2000 by Keith Linder who built his own Shilling "Cygnet" and moored her in Chichester harbour somehere. Maybe there are three there in close proximity?

  6. This seems easier now I'm on computer (was previously using ipad). I like the idea of a wee rally or meet during Yogaff or Cowes weekend - I'm sure I could learn a lot from hearing other Shilling owners' experiences. My mobile is 07980352609 it'd be nice to hear from you - if you're ever planning on being in Solent or Chi harbour and would like to meet up text is often best at first as v bad mobile reception at home. I remember seeing a Shilling in Chi Harbour many years ago - Cygnet I guess -havent seen since but I'll certainly mention your suggestion and blog if I do. My wife is a perfect weather sailor - but after all this bad weather I'm hoping she might get some this year.
