Round up of the rest of 2016

I am not very good at keeping up with this am I?  2016 was a pretty good season and I did a couple of trips up to the Solent for old Gaffer Association meetings, including "YOGAFF" at Yarmouth and a meet up at Beaulieu. In September I went back to Cowes for the Annual Race and Rally. I do not race "Margherita", but I do crew for Tony and Sally Kiddle on their Golant Gaffer "Step back In Time"  Anyway, here are some pictures..........

    I currently have a Shilling in build and have a couple of questions. First is where do you store your anchor and rode? I am wondering if I should consider an anchor locker in the forepeak. Second is, do you know what is inside the flotation compartments in the cabin. Air? Foam?

      Hi. Are you doing the build as part of a boat building course at Lowestoft? Dick Phillips mentioned that someone there had bought plans. If you have trawled through earlier posts you will have seen that I had Margherita built for me and I have a large selection of build photos that may be of use to you. I also made some changes to the base design to improve usability (larger cockpit storage openings and rear Sampson posts for instance. If you want some pictures, or to pick my brains, I am happy to talk. 07831314884. The anchor (and 2m of 6mm chain)stows on the foredeck in front of the cabin and alongside the mast tabernacle, in a fabric sleeve that sits on rubber and is closed by Velcro. Both bits lash to two eyes screwed to the deck. The coiled rode sits on a cleat behind the mast. As I sail on my own this works for me as it is quick to deploy. I will post some pics If I have them. I do not think a storage locker will work. If you build it forward of bulkhead one (in a buoyancy chamber you will have too much mass too far forward and this will alter trim and response to waves. if you dig into the foredeck closer to the cabin front you will impact on foot room in the sleeping area below. The buoyancy chambers in the cabin are empty except for air. Those in the cockpit are used for stowage, with air in the space remaining. Hope this helps, Jeremy
